Covid-19 brings back memories of isolation, anxiety and stress. No hugs, no coffee chats, no meetings, no parties. Yellow signs on walls and floors reminded us over and over “keep a safe Distance.” Our lives have changed and we have moved on, but Covid left its stamp on our memories and lifestyles.
Personally, the isolation and my worry about family members froze me. i had two WIP on my desk. I couldn’t think of the next word for my manuscript. TBR books lined the shelves. I read the first five pages and the next day read the first five pages and the next….I couldn’t concentrate on two of my favorite things to do.
Covid suspended my writing class I taught. I challenged them to write regularly and produce a publishable piece. It had to be positive. No dystopian novel. We were living that.
One dared me to write a Covid Romance..
The dare awakened my imagination. At first, I wrote to amuse my class and have fun. As the two characters, Teagan and Ben worked through constraints, physical ailments and pain, I worked through my worries.
Writing a love story with Covid as a background element was challenging. What can you learn about another if one cannot see facial expression and have no body language to interpret the unspoken feelings? How to show a developing love if the characters only communicate through a closed door?
What other complications in addition to Covid complicate a relationship? What changes does Covid incite in the main characters careers and dreams.? How do dogs, books, music and dance create connections?
the answers to these questions are in the pages of Safe Distance.
The dare gave me something to focus on. Romance by definition requires a happy ending or a happy for now. Romance books sell hope and a belief that love, goodness are possible. That worked for the characters and it worked for me. My latest novel, Safe Distance, was created in response to a dare. I dare you to pick the paperback or ebook.
